It’s that time of year when we all like to scare ourselves. I’m not sure what that’s about, but heck, I’ll write a soundtrack.
In all seriousness, I enjoy the concept of representing emotion in sound. Sound is a powerful method of conveying emotion. It is a more primal mechanism of communication than words by themselves. After all, before there were words, there was sound. Emotional exploration is not only for the sense of peace. Recognition of fear and its contours is important in learning to navigate one’s own mental landscapes.
This is a roughly 30 minute track meant as an exploration of fear. I think it is safe to say that this is not meant for any beginner’s meditation practice.
Rather, it is useful as a soundtrack for a Halloween setup.

Fear? Music by Kourosh able to invoke fear? I was skeptical. I greatly enjoy listening to Kourosh’s music but fear is far from what I expect to experience.
I’ve listened to this piece serveral times, varying the amount of attention I gave to it, and I noted a different experience depending on the level.
When otherwise occupied, the music was pleasant background music except for some of the discordant phrases, especially the piano portion. Those sections seem to jar me back to awareness with a bit of unease.
On giving my full attention to the music, I felt a sense of foreboding coupled with an other worldliness. The swelling crescendos—I think that is redundant, just think of it as emphasis—so familiar in Kourosh’s music is effective. But more effective is the soft portions, particularly the sections where barely a sound can be heard. That softness heightened expectations and uncertainty as to what would come next.
This music might be more versatile than expected, enhancing the context in which it is heard rather than forcefully creating the mood. It will definitely be a good soundtrack for a haunted house, but it is not limited to just that application.
